Attractive autumn gardens
With continuing sunny days after some heavy autumn showers, storms in some places, gardens are bright with the colour of autumn flowers and brilliant green deciduous and evergreen leaves. They are a joy to stroll around, work in as some trimming back of rain stimulated growth is needed plus it’s time to plant and sow many overwintering vegetables, sit in and enjoy entertaining friends for lunch as the temperatures in the mid twenties at mid day are now very comfortable. They are again great places to live in after some extremely hot summer and early autumn days.
Wednesday this week was the 9th October the day of the annual Valencia Day Fiesta. One of the special days of the year when fully fledged Valencia Paellas are cooked as we did for a group of international friends. Yes Dick is the chef and the author of the popular book ‘Your personal guide to making Authentic Valencian Paellas’. He followed the book to the letter and many of the essential ingredients were harvested from his garden including the butter lima and red runner beans, garlic, red pepper, globe artichokes, tomatoes, rosemary, thyme, rabbit, chicken, egg, and parsley. How they are used is described in the book along with the history of the Valencian paella . We will have another paella party before the end of the month, perhaps for Halloween as a change from pumpkin soup bread vegetable and desserts although some large pumpkins are in store.
